Researching into different music labels is vital for me as I’m creating my own music video and I need to have an in depth understanding regarding the media industry.
A record/music label is a brand or company that control the marketing of songs and music videos. Usually, the record label would be a publishing company that is in charge of the production, distribution, marketing and copyright laws for these songs and music videos whilst also scouting for new talent and maintaining contracts with other artists and their managers.
Universal Music Group:
UMG is an American-French global music corporation based in Santa Monica, California. It’s one of the worlds leading music companies, controlling over 25.5% of the music market shares.
The company recognises, expands and distributes recorded music through hundreds of subsidiaries with businesses engaged in recording and publishing music in more than 60 countries.
Artists signed by UMG include: Gwen Stefani, Shawn Mendes, Frank Sinatra, Adele, Drake, Kayne West, Black Eyed Peas and Imagine Dragons.
Warner Music Group:
WMG is an American global record company based in New York City. It’s one of the “big three” recording companies and the third largest in the global music industry alongside UMG and SME, being the only American music conglomerate worldwide.
The company owns and operates some of the biggest and most successful record labels in the world including: Warner Bros. Records, Parlophone and Atlantic Records. WMG also own Warner/Chappell Music, one of the world’s largest music publishers.

Sony Music Entertainment:
SME is a global recorded music company that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America.
It was founded in 1929 as American Record Corporation and renamed Columbia Recording Corporation in 1938, following its acquisition by the Columbia Broadcasting System. In 1966, the company was reorganized to become CBS Records. Sony Corporation bought the company in 1987 and renamed it Sony Music Entertainment in 1991.
